Product Description

Vogel-Johnson Agar Base is a dehydrated selective culture medium formulated for the selective isolation of Staphylococcus aureus in microbiological testing.

The medium combines nutrient components with selective agents and requires the addition of potassium tellurite supplement after sterilization. Once prepared, it provides reliable performance for routine laboratory analysis and quality control applications.

Supplied as a dry powder, this agar base offers flexibility in preparation volume, consistent results, and extended shelf life under proper storage conditions.

Medium Composition

Composition per liter:

  • Pancreatic Digest of Casein — 10.0 g
  • Yeast Extract — 5.0 g
  • Mannitol — 10.0 g
  • Dibasic Potassium Phosphate — 5.0 g
  • Lithium Chloride — 5.0 g
  • Glycine — 10.0 g
  • Phenol Red — 0.025 g
  • Agar — 16.0 g

Preparation Instructions

  1. Suspend 61.0 g of the medium in 1 L of distilled or deionized water.
  2. Heat to boiling until completely dissolved.
  3. Dispense as required.
  4. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
  5. Mix well immediately after sterilization to prevent agar settling.
  6. Cool to approximately 50°C.
  7. Aseptically add potassium tellurite supplement (20 mg) at 1 vial per 100 ml of medium.
  8. Mix gently and pour plates.
