TCBS Agar – 250g | Selective Vibrio Isolation Medium
TCBS Agar (Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose Agar) is the international gold standard for selective isolation and differentiation of Vibrio cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus from seafood, environmental waters, and clinical specimens.
Key Applications:
✔️ Primary plating for V. cholerae in cholera outbreak response
✔️ V. parahaemolyticus screening per FDA BAM Chapter 9
✔️ Seafood import/export testing (ISO 21872)
✔️ Environmental monitoring of coastal waters
Targeted Selective System (Per Liter):
| Key Selective Components | Function |
|————————–|———-|
| Bile Salts (8g) | Inhibits Gram-positive & enteric bacteria |
| High pH (8.7) | Suppresses competing flora |
| Sucrose (20g) | Differentiates sucrose-fermenting vibrios |
| Dual Indicators | Chromogenic colony identification:
→ Yellow colonies: Sucrose+ (V. cholerae)
→ Green colonies: Sucrose- (V. parahaemolyticus)
Optimized Protocol:
1️⃣ Suspend 89.0g in 1L distilled water
2️⃣ Boil 1 minute with continuous stirring
3️⃣ Pour plates at 50-55°C (DO NOT AUTOCLAVE)
Critical Advantages:
– Dual-indicator system: Bromothymol Blue + Thymol Blue for instant color differentiation
– Enhanced selectivity: Citrate-thiosulfate combination inhibits swarming
– High sucrose load: Improves V. cholerae recovery
– Ready-to-use: No supplemental reagents required
– 3-year shelf life: Foil-sealed bottle for moisture protection
Technical Validation:
– Compatible with alkaline peptone water enrichment
– Validated for ISO 21872-1:2017 workflows
