GYM Agar (Glucose Yeast Malt Agar)

GYM Agar, also known as Glucose Yeast Malt Agar, is a microbiological culture medium used for the cultivation of Streptomyces, actinomycetes, and related microorganisms.

Medium Composition

Composition (per liter)

Glucose — 4.0 g
Yeast Extract — 4.0 g
Malt Extract — 10.0 g
Calcium Carbonate — 2.0 g
Agar — 12.0 g

Final pH: 7.2 ± 0.2 (25°C)


Directions for Use

  1. Suspend 32.0 g of the medium in 1 liter of distilled or deionized water.
  2. Heat to boiling and maintain boiling for at least 1 minute to dissolve the agar completely.
  3. Mix thoroughly and dispense as required.
  4. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
  5. Cool to 55–60°C, mix gently, and pour into sterile petri dishes.
  6. Allow plates to solidify before use.
