Dey/Engley Neutralizing Broth Base is a dehydrated culture medium formulated for the preparation of cosmetic samples and the cultivation of microorganisms following exposure to preservatives or disinfectants.

This medium is widely used in cosmetic microbiology to neutralize residual antimicrobial agents during sample preparation, ensuring accurate recovery and enumeration of microorganisms.
The formulation supports bacterial growth after neutralization and is suitable for routine microbiological analysis in cosmetic, personal care, and laboratory testing environments.

Tween 80 must be added separately prior to sterilization according to the preparation instructions.

🧾 Medium Composition (per liter)

  • Pancreatic Digest of Casein – 5.0 g

  • Glucose – 10.0 g

  • Soybean Lecithin – 7.0 g

  • Sodium Thiosulfate – 6.0 g

  • Sodium Hydrogensulfite – 2.5 g

  • Yeast Extract – 2.5 g

  • Sodium Thioglycollate – 1.0 g

  • Bromcresol Purple – 0.02 g

Final pH: 7.6 ± 0.2 (25 °C)


⚙️ Directions for Use

  1. Suspend 34.0 g of the medium in 1 liter of distilled or deionized water.

  2. Heat with stirring until completely dissolved.

  3. Dispense into suitable containers.

  4. Add 1 g Tween 80 per 200 ml of medium.

  5. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 minutes.

  6. Cool and use as required.
