Martin-Lewis Broth Base is a selective enrichment medium designed for the growth of pathogenic Neisseria species, particularly Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This medium promotes selective proliferation of gonococci while suppressing contaminating bacteria. It is used in clinical diagnostics and laboratory research.

Preparation Instructions

  1. Dissolve 2.6 g of the medium in 50 ml of distilled or deionized water.

  2. Autoclave at 121℃ for 15 minutes and cool to room temperature.

  3. Aseptically dissolve 1 g sterile hemoglobin powder in 50 ml sterile water (add glass beads before sterilization for better dissolution) and preheat to 50℃.

  4. Combine hemoglobin solution with the cooled broth base.

  5. Add 1 vial of IsoVitaleX additive and 1 vial of VCNT selective inhibitor per 50 ml medium, mix gently.

  6. Ready for selective enrichment culture of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
